Floating Baffles

Floating baffles are used in municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants to improve water quality. Acme baffles can be used to create side-to-side or flow-thru patterns that increase retention time and eliminate short-circuiting or channeling. Top-to-bottom flow patterns can also be created for a turnover effect. Baffles help improve BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) and decrease TSS (total suspended solids) and offer a cost effective solution to wastewater treatment. Floating baffles are anchored into place and act as a vertical wall which directs flowing water through a pre-determined path to increase the time the water is exposed to the treatment process. Windows are placed at specific locations to achieve the desired flow pattern for the wastewater treatment lagoon.

Various flow patterns can be created with Acme’s floating baffles. In order to effectively treat wastewater, short circuiting must be minimized for the influent wastewater. Short circuiting occurs when wastewater enters a clarifier at a higher velocity in different sections throughout the profile. Salinity and temperature of the influent flows can also cause short circuiting. Short circuiting creates dead space which is undesirable in wastewater treatment because the wastewater is out of the main flow path.

Side-to-side diversion and flow-thru window diversion are used in wastewater treatment baffle designs. Side-to-side and flow-thru increases the retention time of the wastewater. Retention times vary depending on the design of the wastewater treatment plant and can last anywhere from hours to months. Flow-thru and top-to-bottom mixing require windows to regulate the flow of the wastewater through the treatment process. Each design will work effectively for a certain wastewater application process.
